Where do you put your trust?

where do you put your trustA while ago a good friend of mine gave me a new bible as a gift. It is a study bible that has study notes from a jewish perspective. It gave me a deeper understanding of the things Jesus was saying and doing through his life. Its amazing!!

You might wonder why would I mention this. So recently I was reading Matthew 19:16-26 which talks about the meeting between a rich man and Jesus. It comes down to the rich man asking about what good thing he must do to go to heaven. This sentence is very significant in understanding the power money can have over our lives. The rich man probably worked hard and did a lot of things right to come to the place where he was at. He put his life into it. His understanding now became that by him doing something he will get something. So he thinks that out of his strength or might he is able to do good things and by that earn his way into heaven. So the risk of being rich is that you start thinking that your money can fix all things. That is also what the world tells us. Have a lot of money and you can get the big house so you can rest after a hard day at work, a vacation to restore your body, best health care so you never have to worry. Pretty much you are in control. But then where is the trust in, that? If we trust money to fix all our things where does Jesus and God have a place? In the Jewish bible that I got the word faith is often translated as trust. So having faith actually means to trust. When Jesus challenged the rich man to give away everything and follow him, he couldn’t do it. It would have meant to give away everything he trusts in. So it was pretty much impossible for him to go to heaven. But that is actually not just limited to very rich people, this can apply to everyone that puts there trust in money instead of God.

So When I read that story it does 2 things 2 me:

  1. It challenges me to honestly ask myself the question where is my trust in? Yes all of us would say of course it is in Jesus. But if you look a little bit deeper and honest could we all still say that?
  2. It gives me a greater compassion for people that are rich. Its easy to look up to someone rich and be jealous of what they have. But instead we should actually have compassion and a true love for them. Our lives should reflect to each of them how good God is and how much he cares for us and that it is safe to trust Him. We need to be a true friend to rich people not with an alternate motive.

Of course, the chapter doesn’t end with that hopeless verse that its pretty much impossible for a rich man to go to heaven, no that wouldn’t be Jesus. Jesus always has a solution. The story ends with this: With men its impossible but with God all things are possible!! Let us remember this!! With our God nothing is impossible!!

So ask yourself this week honestly those 3 things:

  1. Where is my trust in?
  2. Confess and repent of where you put your trust in outside of God and ask God to help you to trust him from now on in that area!
  3. Be a true friend to someone who is rich so they can see the love of God in your life and how he is trustworthy!

Hey our friend

We hope your week was amazing!! We had an awesome meeting of many ministries in the bay area. It was amazing to see how many ministries are represented outside of ywam and how many churches. We are also looking out for a new meeting spot in the neighborhood since our old one just closed last week. Please pray with us that we find the right location! Last week YWAM’s skater DTS came back from there outreach and they will be graduating this week. Pray for them and their time of transitioning out of DTS and back into their homes. It can be hard to leave a strong Christian community behind and stand on your own.

Make sure to ask yourself the 3 questions above!

God bless you

Love your Neighbor – Testimonies

Love your neighborTestimoniesHow were you able to take care of your neighbors last week? We are sure however you did it you were a blessing!!

This week we just want to share 2 stories with you about how much of a blessing it is to love your neighbor and how much it changes lives. A few days ago I got a free ride from Lyft and I used it to go into the woods to go for a hike. On the way there I encouraged the driver and I found out we live really close to each other. So I invited him to our game night the day after. He was moved by the invite and came. He had a great time getting to know the other neighbors that came and played his first bingo game. Each guest brought a small silly gift as a prize for the bingo game. So when it was his turn to win he picked one of the prices and it included a fortune cookie. He opened it and everyone asked what it said because he seemed really moved. He didn’t want to share first but then he did. It said today you will find what you were looking for. Then he said he was looking for family and he felt like family with all of us and it was something he wanted for a long time. All of us around the table were moved by it too. And it was a simple invite.

For Thanksgiving, we hosted a big meal at our house and invited our neighbor friends. Many people came and our apartment was full. We had friends from all over the neighborhood and all the different places we are connected to. We also had the full age range as well as all different walks of life from rich to poor. During the dinner time, Jen asked everyone to share about what they are thankful for. The common answer was this moment with people, sitting around this table and talking and spending time together. Someone said it was the first meal at a table with a family since home 3 years ago, another said they would have eaten at a restaurant but his mom convinced him to go and he gave us a hug later with tears in his eyes saying thank you so much. And again it was a simple open home.

We hope those 2 stories inspire you to invite your neighbors over and become friends with them. We all need a place to belong so let us create those places!!

Hey our friend

Love your Neighbor – Be positive

Love your neighbor Be postiveWhere you able to start some conversations last week to move towards friendship? Trust us you will be blessed through it!!

Jesus was amazing in the area of positivity. He always saw the positive for people and in people. When he told Peter that he will be the Rock that he will build his church on I’m sure Peter wasn’t that convinced about it.  He just failed Jesus big time and I don’t think he could believe that something so positive could come out of his life. But Jesus insisted and when we look back he builds his church on Peter.

All of us are always bombarded with the negative of the world and also the things that we are not good at. It’s very easy that those things can bring us down. But in the same way, the opposite is true as well.  When we speak positively it can lift people up. You see it with Peter and how the truth changed him. So when you have a conversation with a neighbor and it involves a lot of negativity about life, share something uplifting and positive. It is amazing how a little thing can change the outlook for the rest of the day. It can be something little as I am so thankful for the sunshine.

How to get started:

  1. Fast from negativity. For 1 week let everything you say positive and uplifting.
  2. See how your attitude towards life is changing.
  3. Share something positive with your neighbors or coworkers. It can be anything that is uplifting to you.

Hey our friend

We had a wonderful week here in San Francisco. We had our North beach small group and had many people come over for dinners. Again those things really bring deeper relationship and you get to know each other so much better. I (Markus) also had a board meeting this week where I serve on the finance committee.  It’s encouraging to see how God is using the gifting’s he placed in us. What gifting’s did He place in you? When you know them you can see more how God is using you! I love how Peter talks in 1. Peter 4.11 to use the giftings God has given us to bring Glory to Him. Let us keep doing that!!

Remember this week that you are amazingly gifted and talented!

May God bless you

The power of sleep and rest

the-power-of-sleep-and-restIn one of the first chapters in the bible it says (Genesis 2.2) that God rested on the 7th day. I’m sure He was not out of ideas to create things or do things, but He choose to take a day of rest. We live in a society where the one is glorified who doesn’t rest or stop. That is often seen as an achievement. Companies, Church, ministry, life etc. often demands more and more of our time and more and more of our lives. But the cost of that is often health issues, the lack of meaningful relationships and stress which leads to a shorter life expectancy. So it is really key for us to do what God and Jesus did. But why?

When we sleep and rest our body restores itself. Our heart and blood is being repaired and our brain gets to process all the things it got through the day. If we don’t do that it actually has the opposite effect and we increase the risk of heart attacks, diabetes and other diseases. Sleep also helps our body to deal with stress and be ready for the next day. When we are more rested we are not lashing out at people as easily and we will be able to have times that are more fruitful because we can give our full attention. It also really helps us in our relationship with God since we have more times to have uninterrupted time with Him. And that will encourage you to live the great commission more often!

Jen and I usually take a full day of every week were we just rest, go on walks, spend time with God, watch movies or read. If we don’t get that day we can feel it during the week and it also affects our coming weeks. More stress usually builds up on top of the one we already had and then it gets harder and harder to get rid of it. We also got better in going to bed around the same time and get enough sleep what also helps us during the week. Yes it doesn’t always work for us either life is just that way, but if it doesn’t work sometime we just come back to the healthy way after.

Here are some tips on how to find that rest and sleep that worked for us.

  1. Set a specific day for rest every week. It doesn’t always shave to be the same day, but it makes it a lot easier
  2. Set a time where you go to bed and make it the same time every night. Try out after how much sleep you feel the most rested. Usually they say about 8 hours per night is a good number to go with.
  3. Don’t get discouraged if you didn’t make it for a week. Do it again the week after.

Make the hard choices and you will see how the quality of your life will go up! You can do it!!

Hey our friend
