Love your Neighbor – Do things together

Love your neighbor Do things togetherDid you get a project together in the last week? What was it in your area?

One thing that really stood out to me about Jesus was the fact that most of the time he did things together. He walked with his disciples ate with them and did tasks with them together. That brought a great sense of togetherness.

When you look at a neighborhood and neighbors in that context, how do you think it could look like there? As an example if you go grocery shopping don’t go by yourself, go together with a neighbor. All of us have to go grocery shopping and usually it’s a good way to connect while driving there. Instead of using 2 cars, use 1. It doesn’t just save you gas, but its also good for the environment. It creates an immediate sense of community.

Here is an action step:
Before you go grocery shopping this week, talk to your neighbor that you know the best if they would like to go together!

We hope your week was amazing!! This week we had a team here from Colorado that wanted to learn about how they can love their neighbors. It was a wonderful time. We also had our half yearly Evaluation meeting which was this time hold in San Francisco. It was an encouraging time. This coming Friday we will watch the Movie the Shack together with our Encouragment Group. Make sure to see it. It comes out March 3rd.

Love your Neighbor – Find ways to help!

Love your neighbor find ways to helpLast week we wrote about giftings and how important it is to use them. Today we want to talk about ways to help.

When we look at Jesus we always see how he helped others. It might have been through dinner for a huge crowd or washing the feet of the disciples. Jesus was always about helping others and he always meets a need that was there.

But how can we help our neighbors or our neighborhood? The first thing we have to do is find out what is actually needed. One of the things in our area is dogs. We have more dogs here than children. Many people have dogs and also full-time jobs. So if you are a stay home neighbor you could offer your neighbor to take their dog for a walk during the day. Another one is a cleanup project. A few years ago our DTS students helped to clean up trash from the side of the streets. It’s a great way to help the area, but also you get to meet your neighbors in a positive way.

Help does not always look the same. Spend some time pondering on those questions.

  1. Find out how you can help and also what is needed.
  2. Set a goal and a time by when you want to do it.
  3. Start doing it, and involve your family and neighbors too if possible!

We hope you had a great week. We finally had some sunshine again which is amazing!! We had so many great times with our neighbors this week. A paella night, A Louisiana gumbo night and then we had a game night at our house. When you spend time together you get to know each other and for us and our neighbor friends that is a total blessing.  Find a night in your week to have some time with your neighbors.

Remember this week that you are amazing and loved by Father God!

Love your Neighbor – What holds you back?

Love your neighbor what holds you backLast week we talked about the importance of being outside and how it helps you to connect. This week we want to talk about a few things that can hold us back.

Jesus had many opportunities to be hold back in his ministry, the reason he wasn’t was his focus. He knew what the father told him and does tell him every day. He says really clear that he does nothing what he doesn’t see his father do. So that helped him not to be sidetracked. He could have done more since he did not reach every single need that was around, but he didn’t, because he knew what the father had called him to do!

All of us have our priorities off at times in our life. That probably happened to each one of us and that is the reason why we have to assess from time to time to see how we are moving towards the goal. One of the big things I heard from many friends is that they don’t have the time to reach out to their neighbor. Work and activities takes up all of their time. Yes that can easily happen with the overload of stuff we can do in today’s time. But again that is another reason to prioritize. We need to put a value on loving our neighbor. Jesus made it the second most important command!

Another problem I heard was the area of fear and insecurity. What do they think of me if I go up to them? What if they don’t like me? The chances that they don’t like you are a lot smaller than the ones that they do!! Every person wants to be loved. Do you know how you overcome this fear? You face it! I am afraid of heights and when I look down I start to not feel good. But one of my big dreams was to skydive. Those 2 don’t go together very well. So about 10 years ago I faced my fear by jumping out of a plane. Did all my fear go away by that experience? No, but I know now that it is possible to overcome!

So you see there are different things that can hold you back, but that doesn’t change the calling. Jesus still called us to love our neighbor despite all the things that hold us back. So let’s take those action steps:

  1. Pray and assess what things hold you back.
  2. Ask God to help you overcome them and then move forward!
  3. By overcoming them you are able to help others to do the same thing!

We hope you had a wonderful week!!  An old friend of mine came to visit me from Germany this week which made me really happy!! We also had a wonderful time at our brunch and Haeusser Hangout where we made Pizza together. It is so special to connect with neighbors and become friends with them!  Make 2017 the year of community and the year of loving your neighbor well!!

Love your Neighbor – Be outside

Love your neighbor be outsideLast week we talked about the importance of Prayer and how it will help you seeing people the way God sees them. This week we will talk about the importance of being outside.

When you look at the ministry time Jesus did during his life you notice that many times he was outside in public. He was outside because that is the place the people were. That is as well true for our neighborhoods.

In our modern society it is really easy to avoid the outside world. We drive the car right into the garage and from there walk into the house. If we workout we drive to the gym. But what about if you rethink that, and start to workout in your neighborhood?

Jen and I started jogging every morning around our area. During that time we got to meet many new neighbors, just by simply being out there. This works in any neighborhood you live in. We recently visited family in Pennsylvania and got to meet many of their neighbors during our running time. So this is a simple way to do it.

Start this week off by asking you those simple questions and take action!

  1. How can you be more outside in your neighborhood? Sports, walk etc.?
  2. What do you need to change that you can be more outside?
  3. Get started and meet your neighbors!

We hope you had a wonderful week!! We had 2 meetings this week with different ministries in the bay area. It was very encouraging. At church Jen joined a group that is studying the book now discover your strength together to see what strength God has given each of them. Do you know what strength you have? I think often we focus on the weakness we have, but what about if you develop your strength even more?

The North beach Students are doing well too. They are having a great time at the boys and girls club and with all the things they do in the neighborhood.

Keep praying for the community here and mainly for peace since a lot of people!!

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Philippians 4.8

thank-youEach year this special holiday comes around which in its name encourages us to be thankful. It is so easy to look at things in our life or the world that would make us upset and makes us ungrateful. But when you are ungrateful it can really affect your life in a negative way. In the moment you focus on the bad things in your life it starts to affect every part of you. But the opposite is true as well. When you look at the good in life and start being thankful for it, it affects you in a positive way. When you look at the verse above in Philippians it gives you a guide on what you should put your focus on.

I remember a time in our life where we started every day by saying 5 things we are thankful for. It was amazing to look at it and see how it affected my attitude and the way we looked at things. It was little things like being thankful for the parrots that are really loud and joyful in front of our window or that we are able to worship God freely. Thankfulness did not just affect us, it affected other people in our life as well. When we saw people they noticed that we were happier and in a way that was contagious and helped them to be happier too. As well it opened the door to share about how thankfulness can really change you.

SO we want to encourage you to make a change in your life in this thanksgiving week!

  1. Find 5 things daily in your life that you are thankful for and speak them out.
  2. Say thank you to someone that did not expect it maybe in a store or restaurant or at work?
  3. Start to focus more on things like it says in Philippians 4. Instead of reading just negative news, read things on what god is doing in this world.

Remember this week He is faithful like no one else ever will be and that is a huge reason to be thankful!!

Thanksgiving week is here!!  Have you thought about inviting someone who doesn’t have family to go to, to your Thanksgiving Celebration? Maybe one of your neighbors?

We had a wonderful week in San Francisco. We hosted a small group at our house which was a lot of fun. It was all about spending time in God’s presence. On Saturday we were invited to a bingo event at the boys and girls club which was a great way to connect with more people from our neighborhood! It is actually a really great way to meet people in your community by going to events that are hosted in your area like police meetings or fairs etc.

Pray this week with us for increased thankfulness in our and your own lives as well as the lives of people that are connected with you and us! Also pray that each person will have a place to go for thanksgiving and let us be the family that open our homes to people that don’t have a chance to go home or might not even have a family or place to call home.
